Outfought in the first four rounds of the fight, Anderson Silva dug deep into his arsenal and found the right weapon just in time to stun Chael Sonnen and retain his middleweight title via submission in the main event of UFC 117 on Saturday.

Silva Keeps Title, Escapes Sonnen

Silva was rocked by a solid left early in the fight and quickly yielded control to the challenger Sonnen, who capitalized on his early advantage by launching a variety of ground strikes that had the champion in the losing end more often than not. However, Silva saw a golden opportunity in the fifth round, when he was able to sneak in the match-ending maneuver.

With Sonnen trying to look for an opening on top, Silva caught the challenger with a triangle choke that proved to be his saving grace. Referee Josh Rosenthal called a halt to the match 3 minutes and 10 seconds into the fifth round after Sonnen tapped out to signal the end of his quest for the middleweight title. Silva’s victory preserved his immaculate UFC record, which now stands at 12-0.

In other main fights, Jon Fitch defeated Thiago Alves, Matt Hughes Stopped Ricardo Almeida, Ron Nelson beat Junior dos Santos, and Clay Guida trounced Rafael dos Anjos.
