Manila Hostage-taking Updates 2010 – Manila Hostage Crisis Philippines Manila Hostage Taking

“The President has been meeting with the police, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) officials and Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim. As of now four hostages dead, one in critical condition. We will be issuing a statement later tonight,” Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda told reporters in Malacañang Monday late evening.
Lacierda declined to comment where the meeting was being held.
He said Aquino monitored the hostage drama the whole day.
Unconfirmed information from the Palace said the President was to visit the freed injured hostages in the hospitals.

The Chinese Embassy in Manila on Monday night said that the Philippine government should ensure the safety and security of the Chinese nationals who survived the Quirino Grandstand hostage drama Monday.

“We request that the Philippine side should try its best to make sure that the injured or those who survived the hostage would be taken cared of,” ChineseEmbassy in Manila spokesperson Ethan Sun said in a phone interview with the Manila Bulletin.

“We are hoping for the safety and security of those who were injured,” he added.

Sun said they have yet to issue a formal written statement regarding the hostage drama as they are “still confirming the exact information of how many were killed.”

According to Sun, a working group from the Chinese Embassy was sent to the site earlier, adding that they “requested for some explanation why no SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team did not take action at that time.”

“The working group had a disagreement with Philippine side… When the whole drama was over, the Philippine side said sorry… about this action,” he said.

Another working group from the Chinese Embassy was on its way Monday night to the hospitals to check on the survivors of the hostage crisis, according to Sun.

About 25 Chinese nationals onboard a tourist bus were taken hostage by former policeman who was relieved from service.

Clad in a complete police uniform and armed with an M-16 rifle, a bemedalled dismissed official of the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday seized a tourist bus and held hostage 22 foreigners and three Filipinos to demand his reinstatement near the Quirino Grandstand at Rizal Park in Manila.

Chief Inspector Erwin Margarejo, Manila Police District spokesman, identified the disgruntled dismissed police officer as Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza.

Margarejo said Mendoza’s initial demand was for the Office of the Ombudsman to act swiftly and release its decision on his pending motion for reconsideration in connection with the administrative case filed against him and for the PNP to reinstate him.

Based on records, Mendoza was dismissed from the service last year due to alleged extortion.

As of 4:26 p.m. on Monday, 9 hostages (three kids, six adults) had released but authorities declined to divulge the suspect’s other demands.

Six of the seven foreigners released are from Hong Kong. They are Tsan Yee Lai, 40; Fuchak Yin, 10; Wong Chin Nat, 12; Fu Chang Yin, 4; Diana Chan; and Lee See Kyu.

Police said Mendoza seized the Hong-Thai travel and tourist bus (TWU-799) at around 10 a.m. on Monday as it was about to leave Fort Santiago in Intramuros, Manila.

Mendoza was able to board the bus when he told the driver that he would just hitch a ride.

Once inside, he declared the hostage-taking and commandeered the bus until they reached Rizal Park. Mendoza was eventually killed as police gained control of the bus.

A handwritten note, signed by Mendoza, saying “BIG DEAL WILL START AFTER 3 PM TODAY” was stuck to the door of the bus.

A sign stuck to a window said “3PM TODAY DEAD LOCK”.

Also stuck to the bus door was a piece of paper with the handwritten message: “BIG MISTAKE TO CORRECT A BIG WRONG DECISION”. A larger piece of paper on the front windshield read, “RELEASE FINAL DECISION” and then what appeared to be details of his case.

So far, Margarejo said, Mendoza was cooperating with police negotiators.

“He was courteous. Ok naman siya. He’s been cooperating,” he added.

Hong Kong’s Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee told reporters authorities were very concerned about the incident.

Two officials were being sent to Manila and a hotline was being set up in Hong Kong for families of the hostages.

“The information we’ve received so far is that no one is injured,” Lee said in Hong Kong.

He said he hoped the incident would be peaceful resolved and the hostages were released “safely and as quickly as possible.”

Bemedalled cop

Mendoza is a bemedalled police officer who is just months away from his mandatory retirement from the police service, records from the Philippine National Police (PNP) revealed.

A record obtained by the Manila Bulletin from the PNP-Directorate for Police Records and Management (DPRM) revealed that Senior Inspector Mendoza obtained a total of 17 police service medals and a commendation for excellent job performance.

Among them are the Medalya ng Papuri, PNP Badge of Honor, Medalya ng Kasanayan, Medalya ng Kagalingan and Medalya ng Paglilingkod.

Mendoza is expected to bow out of police service on January 10, 2011 when he will reach the mandatory retirement age of 56.

A graduate of the Philippine College of Criminology, the 55-year old Mendoza entered the law enforcement service through the Philippine Constabulary-Integrated National Police (PC-INP) in 1981.

The police service apparently runs in the family of Mendoza, having a brother who is in active service with a rank of Senior Police Officer and a son with a rank of Police Inspector and assigned as deputy chief of Bangued town police in Abra.

Police records revealed that Mendoza joined and was absorbed in the PNP with a rank of Senior Police Officer 3 in 1991.

“Based on our records, he rose from the ranks, starting as a patrolman.

He was absorbed when the PNP is created in 1991,” a police source said.

Mendoza was promoted to Police Inspector (equivalent to lieutenant in the military) in 2002 and then to Police senior Inspector (captain) three years later. His assignment is mostly at the Manila Police District.

While it was not specifically cited in the police records, a police source said trouble began for Mendoza in 2008 when he and at least four other policemen were accused of extorting money from a chef whom they accosted allegedly for parking violation and possession of illegal drugs.

The chef was allegedly forced to eat shabu after failing to produce R200,000, but was later released when a friend allegedly gave P20,000 to one of the arresting officers.

As a result, Mendoza was meted a 90-day preventive suspension which was imposed from June 16 to September 14 in 2008. He was reinstated after the suspension was served.

But on February 16 last year, the PNP leadership ordered that he be dismissed from the service.

“I believe that what really depressed him is that the dismissal comes with an order that his retirement benefits be forfeited,” the police source said.

This was confirmed by Mendoza’s updated service records which stated in the February 16, 2008 order that the dismissal has accessory penalty of forfeiture of retirement benefits and perpetual disqualification from the government service.

Senior Superintendent Agrimero Cruz, Jr., PNP spokesman, said the PNP leadership has been closely monitoring the hostage-taking incident and is optimistic that he the situation will be resolved peacefully.

“The general guidance of the Chief PNP (Director General Jesus Verzosa) is to strictly observe to the letter the police operational procedures on hostage-crisis situations with paramount emphasis on the safety of the hostages, the police personnel on the ground, and the hostage-taker himself,” said Cruz.

The official said a Crisis Management Committee (CMC) has been activated shortly after news of the hostage-taking broke out, headed by Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno. The Committee, he said, is aimed at coordinating all actions of concerned police units and agencies. (With reports from Czarina Nicole O. Ong and Jeamma E. Sabate)

2010 Arizona election results

Arizona

The challenge from J.D. Hayworth has forced Mr. McCain to move to the right of his previous positions on immigration, social issues and fiscal affairs.
via A Guide to Tuesday Night’s Primary Results – The Caucus Blog – NYTimes.com.
Senator John McCain, a Republican who is seeking a fifth term, is looking for a victory that would – in part, at least – serve as a bit of vindication over his stinging defeat two years ago in the presidential race against Barack Obama. Mr. McCain has spent more than $20 million in his race against J.D. Hayworth, a former congressman from Arizona, but seems to have solidified an edge that only a few months ago seemed unlikely.
Still, with voter turnout expected to be low in Arizona, will the margin be as wide as some polls have suggested?
Ben Quayle, the son of former Vice President Dan Quayle, will learn his fate in the Republican primary race for the 3rd Congressional District. It would be tempting to read too much into the outcome of this contest, particularly given the year’s shorthanded establishment vs. insurgent narrative. Mr. Quayle has taken an aggressive stance against President Obama, calling him the worst president ever, but his youthful travails – writing for a pornography Web site, for starters – have also been an issue and voters have a long list of candidates to consider, including Pamela Gorman, another leading contender.
And what about Gov. Jan Brewer? Not only is she poised to win the Republican nomination, the chatter of her being ripe for a Democratic knockout in November has all but gone away, given her newfound popularity over the state’s immigration law.

Arizona Election Results 2010 : John McCain Wins Arizona Republican Primary

US Senator John McCain (73) easily won the race in an Arizona primary on Tuesday, fending off a challenge seen as a test of the country’s anti-incumbent mood as Americans decide in November who controls Congress.

The four-term senator and defeated Republican presidential nominee was well ahead of congressman and conservative talk radio JD Hayworth when he gave his victory speech.

But his rival – who was backed by the conservative Tea Party movement – waged a serious enough campaign to force the once moderate McCain to beat a hasty path to the right.

Florida Election Results: Kendrick Meek Defeats Jeff Greene In Democratic Senate Primary

Four-term Rep. Kendrick Meek defeated real estate billionaire Jeff Greene in Florida's Democratic Senate primary, the Associated Press reported. Meek will go on to a general election fight with Republican Marco Rubio and Republican-turned-Independent Charlie Crist.

Meek and Greene candidates have been relentless in criticizing each other, and the vitriol is unlikely to end with Tuesday's primary.

Meek has called Greene a "bad man" who earned his wealth on the backs of the working class; Greene made his money forecasting that the mortgage market would collapse. Greene called the congressman corrupt and criticized his mother, former Rep. Carrie Meek, saying she got money and a Cadillac Escalade from a developer seeking federal money for a project.

The nomination was supposed to be a lock for Meek, a one-time Florida Highway Patrol trooper and son of the former congresswoman in the north Miami congressional district. But on the last day possible, Greene entered the race and immediately began spending millions on television ads.

Meek has been substantially outspent in the race. He estimates Greene has written checks totaling $26 million, a number the Greene campaign won't confirm.

"I'm encouraged by the numbers that we see right now, that we're even being considered after $26 million. Usually it goes to the guy that runs the most television commercials, putting the mail in the most mailboxes. In this case people are looking at the grass-roots campaign we've run in the last year-and-a-half," Meek said.

Greene's television ads have far outnumbered Meek's and the real estate mogul has blanketed the state with direct mail pieces and robocalls, including one recorded by television personality Star Jones.

But Meek has outworked Greene on getting around the state.

Meek seemed to be thriving on recent momentum. He had a big smile on his face most of the day, including a 50-minute interview with Bubba the Love Sponge, a popular Tampa-based radio talk show host with a statewide audience. Bubba, who legally changed his name to Bubba the Love Sponge back in the 80s, told his audience he has already voted for Meek and strongly encouraged listeners to do the same.

Greene stuck to the theme he's had since entering the race in April on the last possible day to qualify for the ballot: he's an outsider whose created jobs and Meek is a career politician.

"It's been a great day and it's been a marvelous four months. I have to say four months of traveling around Florida, what I'm seeing is the unemployment keeps getting worse. I'm the only jobs creator who's running for United States Senate in Florida. Hopefully, the people of Florida will give me a chance to represent them," Greene said.

A Quinnipiac University poll released Monday showed 39 percent of likely primary voters supported Meek, compared to 29 percent who favored Greene. But 28 percent said they still hadn't made up their minds. The poll, taken Saturday and Sunday, had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

Greene shrugged off recent polls that show him trailing.

"The polls, they're up and they're down every day. I think last week we were up 8, then the next day we were down 14," Greene said. "Look, this campaign has been embraced by the people of Florida since the day I got into this campaign because I offer a clear choice: more of the same politicians who have failed us or me."

The newly-minted Democratic nominee following Florida's primary will face GOP contender Marco Rubio and Republican-turened-independent candidate Gov. Charlie Crist in the November election.

Ignoramus - An Academic play by George Ruggle

Ignoramus is a college farce, a 1615 academic play by George Ruggle. Written in Latin (with passages in English and French), it was arguably the most famous and influential academic play of English Renaissance drama. Ruggle based his play on La Trappolaria (1596), an Italian comedy by Giambattista della Porta (which in turn borrows from the Pseudolus of Plautus).

In Latin ignōrāmus the first-person plural present active indicative of īgnōrō (“I do not know”, “I am unacquainted with”, “I am ignorant of”) literally means “we are ignorant of” or “we do not know”. The term acquired its English meaning of an ignorant person or dunce as a consequence of Ruggle’s play.

Performance
The play was first produced in Clare College, Cambridge on Wednesday, March 8, 1615, as part of the program of entertainments for a visit by King James I. James enjoyed the play so much that he returned to Cambridge to see it again on Saturday, May 13 of that year.[1] Contemporary John Chamberlain reported that "the play was full of mirth and variety with many excellent actors, but more than half spoiled by its extreme length of six hours.

Texts
Ignoramus was entered into the Stationers' Register on April 18, 1615, and was published later that year by the bookseller Walter Burre. Two subsequent editions were issued in 1630, and other editions followed in 1658, 1659, 1668, 1707, 1731, 1736, 1737, and after. John Sidney Hawkins issued an elaborately-edited text in 1787.

Several manuscripts of the play also exist. The MS. in the collection of the Bodleian Library, Tanner MS. 306, features a cast list of the amateur actors in the original production.[2]

Fernando Parkhurst translated the original into English in 1660, as Ignoramus, or the Academical Lawyer; Robert Codrington's translation followed in 1662. The English-language versions were presented onstage during the Restoration.

Satire
The play satirizes the college recorder, Francis Brackyn, a "constant adversary of the university"[3] who is represented as the Ignoramus of the title. Brackyn was unpopular among the academics of the town as a "common lawyer" (they used a crude "law Latin" that the academics deplored); he had previously been ridiculed in the third of the Parnassus plays. In Ignoramus, Brackyn is given a romance of false loves; he is enamored of Rosabella and pays 600 gold pieces for her hand in marriage, but is tricked into being with the mannish Polla. Like Malvolio, who is supposed mad, he is suspected of being possessed and put through an exorcism before being carried off to a monastery to recuperate (and to stay away from the loves of the more worthy wits).

The lawyers who were the subject of the play's satire did not enjoy the work; Sir Edward Coke, the Lord Chief Justice, believed that he was a target of some of the barbs. The play provoked a quarrel between academics and lawyers. The lawyers responded with satirical poems and ballads, which inspired responses by the academics, to create a passionate controversy. Ruggle's play even had an influence in the reform of legal language in England.[4]

Author
George Ruggle (1575–1622) graduated Lavenham grammar school and matriculated at St. John's, Cambridge in 1589. He transferred to Trinity College, where he received his B.A. in 1593 and his M.A. in 1597. He became a fellow of Trinity the following year, and remained at the college until 1620.

Upon Ruggle's death, Nicholas Ferrar read a eulogy for the academic at a meeting of the Virginia Company; he referred to Ruggle as a "Brother of the Company" and revealed that Ruggle had worked for the Company for the last three years of his life. In his will, Ruggle left £100 for the Christian education of American Indian children in Virginia.[5]

Ruggle is reported to have written other plays; but none are extant.[6]

Miss Universe 2010: Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete

The stunning brunette from Guadalajara inherited the title from Venezuela’s Stefania Fernandez and beat out 83 beauty queens from all over the globe — including Miss USA Rima Fakih — on stage in Sin City. In fact, the 22-year-old nature enthusiast defeated favorites from Ireland, the Philippines and Venezuela to become the 59th winner of the crown in a show broadcast live around the world. In a major shock, this year’s Miss Venezuela failed to make it past the first cut, when the 83 contestants were whittled down to 15. Miss USA, another favorite, was also eliminated early on.

Navarrete is Mexico’s second Miss Universe; Lupita Jones of Mexico won the title in 1991. Navarrete’s title comes with a package of prizes — including an undisclosed salary, a luxury New York apartment with living expenses, a one-year scholarship to the New York Film Academy with housing after her reign is complete, plus jewelry, and shoes and a new wardrobe.

Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps was crowned second runner-up. Miss Australia Jesenti Campbell is second runner-up. The Miss Congeniality Universe award went to Campbell, while Miss Thailand Fonthip Watcharatrakul won Miss Photogenic Universe and a second award for having the Best National Costume.

HURRICANE KATRINA — MOST DESTRUCTIVE HURRICANE EVER TO STRIKE THE U.S

On August 28, 2005, Hurricane Katrina was in the Gulf of Mexico where it powered up to a Category 5 storm on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale packing winds estimated at 175 mph.

At 7:10 a.m. EDT on August 29, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in southern Plaquemines Parish Louisiana, just south of Buras, as a Category 3 hurricane. Maximum winds were estimated near 125 mph to the east of the center.

Although Katrina will be recorded as the most destructive storm in terms of economic losses, it did not exceed the human losses in storms such as the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, which killed as many as 6,000-12,000 people, and led to almost complete destruction of coastal Galveston. (Click image on left for high resolution version.)

Hurricane Andrew, in 1992, cost approximately $21 billion in insured losses (in today’s dollars), whereas estimates from the insurance industry as of late August 2006, have reached approximately $60 billion in insured losses (including flood damage) from Katrina. The storm could cost the Gulf Coast states as much as an estimated $125 billion.

Hundreds of NOAA employees from many divisions of the agency were involved with Hurricane Katrina, which involved forecasting the storm; surveying and clearing waterways; responding to oil and chemical spills; and testing fisheries.

380 MILLION Eggs Recalled Over Salmonella

EGG RECALL LIST UPDATE - 380 million eggs coming from Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa have been recalled in several states over potential salmonella contamination, linked to seven reported cases of Salmonella in Minnesota, eight in Colorado, 266 in California, and many more in other states.

Egg Recall List

Even if consumers have already checked their eggs based on the original egg recall list, officials at Wright County Egg suggest looking again. One end of each egg carton is stamped with a number starting with a P (which stands for plant). If the number on your carton is P1720 or P1942, look carefully at the three-digit number that typically follows it.
If that number falls within the range of 136 to 229, the eggs are part of the recall. (The numbers represent dates: The 136th day of the year was May 16; the 229th was Aug. 17.)

If you're checking eggs for the first time, also look for these plant numbers from the original recall: P1026, P1413, and P1946. That recall involved date numbers 136 to 225 (May 16 to Aug. 13).

Tthe eggs may have been sold under any of the following brand names: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps.

Story continues below
Wright County Egg says consumers should return purchased eggs affected by the recall to the store where they were purchased. For more information, consumers can visit the Egg Safety Center, or call Wright County egg's information line at 866-272-5582, which contains a recording with recall details and instructions.

The New York Times reports that Wright County Egg, the company behind the recall, "is owned by Jack DeCoster, who has had run-ins with regulators over poor or unsafe working conditions, environmental violations, the harassment of workers and the hiring of illegal immigrants." The Times writes:

Mr. DeCoster is well known to federal regulators. In 1997, one of his companies agreed to pay a $2 million fine by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for violations in the workplace and worker housing. Officials said workers were forced to handle manure and dead chickens with their bare hands and to live in trailers infested with rats. The labor secretary in the Clinton administration, Robert B. Reich, called Mr. DeCoster's operation "an agricultural sweatshop."

Mr. DeCoster's facilities have also been periodically raided by immigration officials. In 2003, Mr. DeCoster pleaded guilty to charges of knowingly hiring immigrants who were in the country illegally and he paid more than $2 million as part of a federal settlement.

Mr. DeCoster was also charged by Iowa authorities in the 1990s with violations of environmental rules governing hog manure runoff.

The Associated Press: Egg Recall Tied To Salmonella Grows To 380 Million Eggs:

By MIKE STOBBE and MARY CLARE JALONICK (AP): Hundreds of people have been sickened in a salmonella outbreak linked to eggs in four states and possibly more, health officials said Wednesday as a company dramatically expanded a recall to 380 million eggs.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working with state health departments to investigate the illnesses. No deaths have been reported, said Dr. Christopher Braden, a CDC epidemiologist involved in the investigation.

Initially, 228 million eggs, or the equivalent of 19 million dozen-egg cartons, were recalled by the company Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa. But that number was increased to nearly 32 million dozen-egg cartons.

Minnesota, a state with some of the best food-borne illness investigators in the country, has tied at least seven salmonella illnesses to the eggs.

Other states have seen a jump in reports of the type of salmonella. For example, California has reported 266 illnesses since June and believes many are related to the eggs. Colorado saw 28 cases in June and July, about four times the usual number. Spikes or clusters of suspicious cases have also been reported in Arizona, Illinois, Nevada, North Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin.

Salmonella is the most common bacterial form of food poisoning. And the strain involved in the outbreak is the most common strain of salmonella, accounting for roughly 20 percent of all salmonella food poisonings.

Unfortunately, current lab tests do not allow health officials to fingerprint this form of salmonella as precisely as other kinds of food-borne illness. So determining the size of a salmonella enteritidis outbreak is a little more challenging, Braden said.

The Food and Drug Administration also is investigating.

Much of the investigation so far has been centered on restaurants in California, Colorado, Minnesota and North Carolina. They are not necessarily breakfast places -- it's possible some got sick from eating a salad dressing that had a raw egg in it, or eating soup with an undercooked egg dropped in, Braden said.

In North Carolina, a cluster of about 80 illnesses in April were linked to meringue-containing chocolate pie and banana pudding served at a Durham barbecue restaurant, health officials said.

Eggs from Wright County Egg were linked to illnesses in the four states. The eggs were distributed around the country and packaged under the names Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemp. It wasn't immediately clear when the eggs were produced and distributed.

The initial recall was issued last week. Eggs affected by the expanded recall were distributed to food wholesalers, distribution centers and food service companies in California, Colorado, Minnesota, Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Oklahoma, Oregon, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.

"We are undertaking this additional recall to further protect the safety of consumers -- this voluntary measure is consistent with our commitment to egg safety, and it is our responsibility," Wright County Egg officials said in a statement Wednesday evening.

In an earlier statement, company officials said the FDA is "on-site to review records and inspect our barns." The officials said they began the recall Aug. 13.

The most common symptoms of salmonella are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight hours to 72 hours of eating a contaminated product. It can be life-threatening, especially to those with weakened immune systems.

This form of salmonella can be passed from chickens that appear healthy. And it grows inside eggs, not just on the shell, Braden noted.

Thoroughly cooking eggs can kill the bacteria. But health officials are recommending people throw away or return the recalled eggs.

Associated Press writers Ken Ritter in Las Vegas, Bob Christie in Phoenix, Betsy Blaney in Lubbock, Judith Kohler in Denver and Todd Richmond in Madison contributed to this report.

Previously:

UPDATE: Egg Recall Covers 228 Million Eggs Due To Salmonella Outbreak (8/18/10, 10:43am EST):

BY MARY CLARE JALONICK: WASHINGTON (AP) -- An Iowa egg producer is recalling 228 million eggs after being linked to an outbreak of salmonella poisoning.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said eggs from Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa, were linked to several illnesses in Colorado, California and Minnesota. The CDC said about 200 cases of the strain of salmonella linked to the eggs were reported weekly during June and July, four times the normal number of such occurrences.

State health officials say tainted eggs have sickened at least 266 Californians and seven in Minnesota.

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating.

In a statement, company officials said the FDA is "on-site to review records and inspect our barns." The officials said they began the recall Aug. 13.

The most common symptoms of salmonella are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight hours to 72 hours of eating a contaminated product. It can be life-threatening, especially to those with weakened immune systems.

Previously:

The Associated Press reports:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - State health officials say seven salmonella cases in Minnesota have been linked to a multistate egg recall.

The salmonella cases were identified in two restaurant outbreaks in May and in July. Health officials believe the eggs are the likely source.

The eggs from Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa were delivered to food distribution centers and food service companies in eight states, including Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.

Minnesota Public Radio reports that for every confirmed salmonella case, state health officials estimate there are 38 unconfirmed cases.

The affected eggs are also being recalled in California, Colorado, Nebraska, Illinois, and Missouri.

The affected cartons come in varying sizes and carry plant numbers P1026, P1413 and P1946, followed by a date code ranging from 136 to 225. The stamps with the date codes and plant numbers can be found on the end of the egg carton, and the eggs may be sold under any of the following brand names: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps.

In a statement, Wright County Egg says consumers should return purchased eggs affected by the recall to the store where they were purchased, Food Safety News reports:

"Our primary concern is keeping Salmonella out of the food supply and away from consumers. As a precautionary measure, Wright County Egg also has decided to divert its existing inventory of shell eggs to a breaker, where they will be pasteurized to kill any Salmonella bacteria present," the statement said.

"Consumers who believe they may have purchased these shell eggs should not eat them but should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. This recall is of shell eggs only. Other egg products produced by Wright County Eggs are not affected."

Roger Clemens Charge in Drug Case

Roger Clemens, the larger-than-life pitcher who appeared destined for the Baseball Hall of Fame, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Washington on Thursday on charges that he lied to Congress when he said he never used performance-enhancing drugs.

Clemens became the third high-profile athlete in three years to be charged with lying about the use of banned substances and to have on-the-field accomplishments tarnished.

Roger Clemens Charge in Drug Case

Marion Jones, who won five track and field medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics, served six months in prison after pleading guilty in 2007 to making false statements to federal authorities about her use of performance-enhancing drugs. Barry Bonds, baseball’s career home run leader, is scheduled for trial in March on charges that he made false statements to a grand jury about his use of performance-enhancing drugs during the investigation of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative in California.

The 19-page indictment charged Clemens, 48, with three counts of making false statements, two counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of Congress during his testimony in a nationally televised hearing in February 2008 before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

At that hearing, Clemens and his former trainer Brian McNamee contradicted each other about whether Clemens had used steroids and human growth hormone. Andy Pettitte, Clemens’s friend and a longtime teammate, provided a written statement under oath to Congressional investigators in which he said Clemens admitted to him in 1999 or 2000 that he had used H.G.H.

Days after the hearing, the Democratic and Republican leaders of the committee asked the Justice Department to open an investigation into Clemens’s testimony.

If convicted, Clemens could face up to 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine, but under current sentencing guidelines, a conviction would most likely bring a 15- to 21-month sentence. He would probably receive less prison time if he accepted a plea agreement.

“Our government cannot function if witnesses are not held accountable for false statements made before Congress,” said Ronald C. Machen Jr., the United States attorney for the District of Columbia. “Today the message is clear: if a witness makes a choice to ignore his or her obligation to testify honestly, there will be consequences.”

The indictment is another blow to Major League Baseball, which is still dealing with the aftermath of the so-called steroid era, in which hundreds of players used performance-enhancing drugs without fear of penalty until the early 2000s. It also continues Clemens’s remarkable fall from grace, which included an admission that he had been unfaithful to his wife after published reports tied him to other women.

In a comment posted on his Twitter account shortly after the indictment became public, Clemens again denied using performance-enhancing drugs.

“I look forward to challenging the Government’s accusations, and hope people will keep an open mind until trial,” the message said. “I appreciate all the support I have been getting. I am happy to finally have my day in court.”

Clemens, a Texas native, became an overpowering presence with the Boston Red Sox in the second half of the 1980s, setting strikeout records and agitating hitters by throwing fastballs under their chins.

But he never won a World Series with the Red Sox, and in 1996 their general manager, Dan Duquette, declined to re-sign him, saying Clemens, 33 at the time, was “in the twilight of his career.”

Over the next decade, however, Clemens became better even as he grew older. He racked up four more of his seven Cy Young Awards and helped the Yankees win the World Series in 1999 and 2000.

In 2004, Clemens returned to Texas, pitching three seasons for the Houston Astros. After flirting several times with retirement, he returned to the Yankees in May 2007, appearing by surprise in the middle of a Sunday afternoon game at Yankee Stadium and dramatically announcing over the stadium loudspeaker that he had rejoined the team.

But five months later, Clemens was forced to confront allegations that he had used performance-enhancing drugs after the release of a report by George J. Mitchell, the former senator appointed by Commissioner Bud Selig to investigate doping in baseball.

Clemens was the highest-profile player cited in the report, which named him, Pettitte and roughly 100 other players for ties to steroids and human growth hormone.

The report based the accusations about Clemens and Pettitte on statements from McNamee, who said he injected Clemens with steroids and human growth hormone on numerous occasions from 1998 to 2001. (McNamee said in a sworn statement that he had also injected Clemens’s wife, Debbie, with H.G.H., at Clemens’s request.) Pettitte quickly issued a statement admitting his use of human growth hormone.

Clemens, however, was defiant and with the help of Rusty Hardin, a lawyer in Houston who shared Clemens’s brashness, began a public attack on McNamee’s credibility. Clemens went on CBS’s “60 Minutes” to deny the accusations, and in a news conference he and Mr. Hardin played a tape of a telephone conversation between McNamee and Clemens.

After several weeks of public back and forth between Mr. Hardin and lawyers for McNamee, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform summoned Clemens and McNamee to testify under oath. The committee said Clemens had questioned the credibility of the Mitchell report, which the committee had pushed baseball to compile.

Clemens swept through the halls of Congress, posing for photos with members of the committee that was investigating him and autographing their souvenirs. But that bravado worked against him, lawmakers said in interviews Thursday. He may have falsely believed that his fame would trump the testimony of Pettitte and McNamee that contradicted his own.

His chutzpah, the lawmakers said, may have led Clemens to issue outright denials when previous baseball players had evaded prosecution by using vague or equivocal language.

On Feb. 13, 2008, five months after Clemens pitched in his final major league game, he and McNamee sat next to each other before the committee and disputed each other’s account. Responses from lawmakers broke down along partisan lines, the Republicans generally siding with Clemens and the Democrats with McNamee.

Among those who testified before the grand jury were McNamee, Pettitte, David Segui — a former major leaguer who was named in the Mitchell report and has admitted using performance-enhancing drugs — and Jose Canseco, a friend and former teammate of Clemens who has also said he used performance-enhancing drugs.

Canseco wrote a book in which he linked several high-profile players, including Mark McGwire, to the use of performance-enhancers, but he has been one of the few people to come to Clemens’s defense, saying he had no knowledge that Clemens used banned substances. One intriguing piece of evidence in the Clemens case was syringes that McNamee said he stored in his basement after using them to inject Clemens with drugs.

McNamee handed over the syringes and related drug paraphernalia to federal authorities shortly after Clemens began publicly disputing his account. The authorities tested them for the presence of performance-enhancing drugs and Clemens’s DNA. The New York Times reported last year that the tests revealed the presence of steroids. The Washington Post reported that authorities detected the presence of Clemens’s DNA.

In the Yankees’ locker room in the Bronx on Thursday, Pettitte and Derek Jeter, another longtime teammate of Clemens, declined to discuss the indictment. But Jorge Posada, who caught many of Clemens’s games as a Yankee, came to his defense.

“We’re still very good friends and hopefully everything will be all right,” Posada said. “I’m going to support him and going to be behind him, and that’s all I can say.”

Vibram FiveFingers: Barefoot Running Shoes Selling Out Fast

If you want to run barefoot, you have two options. You can either run without wearing shoes, or you can wear a pair of Vibram FiveFingers barefoot running shoes.

For many runners, they only have the first choice. Vibram FiveFingers shoes are increasingly hard to get. Vibram created these barefoot running shoes a few years ago, but now that they have become so popular, Vibram is having a hard time keeping up with the demand.

Vibram FiveFingers

CNN reports that Vibram is a 75-year old Italian company, that is best known for making soles for high end boots. But 6 years ago, Robert Fliri approached the company with a shoe that could hardly be called a shoe. It is better described as a foot glove.

Vibram FiveFingers shoes give you the feeling of running barefoot, but protect your feet from dirt and abrasions. The shoes were brought to the market in 2006. Times Magazine named the barefoot running shoes one of the best health inventions of 2007. And last year, Christopher McDougall’s book ‘Born to Run’ praised Vibram’s new shoes, as well as the benefits of barefoot running.

This year, a study by Harvard gave even more praise to the benefits of barefoot running, which made Vibram FiveFingers barefoot shoes an even bigger hit.

The Guardian reports that shoe runners tend to land on the heel of their foot, where barefoot runners tend to land on the ball of their foot. Over time, constant pressure on the heel can cause injuries, like ankle sprains, Achilles tendinitis, shin splints and even back problems.

The shoes cost around $75 to $125. Vibram is expanding its operations to try and meet demands.

But for the time being, if you see a pair of these shoes, buy them while you have the chance…or just go running barefoot.

Hipmunk Is a Fantastic, Surprisingly Usable Flight Search Site

Web site Hipmunk re-imagines flight search, translating the information you're most interested in to a user-friendly chart of possible flights.

Most popular flight search engines are cluttered, full of text, and difficult to understand at a glance. Hipmunk takes the most important flight information you'd get at any flight search engine—travel time, layovers, price—and organizes it into an actually useful visual (rather than all-text) interface.

You can still sort results by price, number of stops, departure/arrival time, and duration, but you also get an extra search category called agony. What's "agony" entail, you ask? Hipmunk's co-founder Adam Goldstein explains that agony is:

..a combined function of price, duration, and number of stops—basically the total agony you'll experience in your butt and your savings.
If you've always dreaded searching for a flight because you don't enjoy deciphering your results, Hipmunk is a refreshingly clear alternative.

Md. boy stabbed by stingray barb in N.C., survives infection

A 10-year-old Maryland boy survived being stabbed in the abdomen by a stingray barb in North Carolina's Outer Banks.

Candace Tokar of Thurmont says her family was watching a fisherman remove a ray's barbed stinger earlier this month when the barb snapped off and flew through the air and stabbed her son, Quentin. The barb that hit Quentin's liver was removed the next day, and he spent four days at a hospital before returning home.

But he was later admitted to Frederick Memorial Hospital and Johns Hopkins Children's Center after an infection from bacteria on the sea creature's body spread.

Abby Elliott and Fred Armisen Dating: After Split From Elisabeth Moss

Abby Elliott and Fred Armisen Dating: After Split From Elisabeth Moss – Conflicting work schedules have made it hard for Fred Armisen and Elisabeth Moss to spend enough time with each other so they eventually decided that they should probably get a divorce.

“Both him and Elisabeth have moved on,” a source said in a statement. The couple were married in October and split in May. “It was totally amicable and friendly.”

This just goes to show how hard it is to maintain a Hollywood marriage. All too often you see the marriage end as quickly as it begin, which is not fun for anyone involved. Moss has remained low-key, but reportedly Armisen is now dating his fellow SNL cast member Abby Elliott. The two of them went out for a dinner in Los Angeles.

Abby Elliott and Fred Armisen Dating

“They are dating and it all happened after him and Elisabeth split,” says the source. “They’ve always been close friends on set and … they started hanging out.”

According to the source, the relationship is in its very early stages and they are still getting to know each other outside of the work environment. They are not exclusively dating, and as far as we can tell they have only been on one date thus far. It will be interesting to see how their date affects their work relationship.

5-star recruit James Wilder Jr. picks FSU over Georgia, Florida

James Wilder Jr., a five-star recruit and consensus Top 5 national prospect, picked Florida State over Georgia and Florida during a heavily-attended, regionally-televised news conference Wednesday afternoon at Plant High School in Tampa.

James Wilder Jr.

“The FSU coaches were the big difference for me as far as my decision,” Wilder told reporters at the news conference. “Assistant coach Eddie Gran has helped put a lot of top running backs in the National Football League and that was very attractive to me.”

There had been reports as late as Wednesday morning that the 6-foot-2, 220-pound athlete, who intends to play running back in college, was going to select Georgia. And, dressed in black shirt with a red vest, it looked like that might be the case.

But as it turns out Wilder had been favoring coach Jimbo Fisher’s Seminoles for a while. Late last month he blew off a scheduled trip to Gainesville for Florida’s Friday Night Lights camp in order to remain in Tallahassee on an unofficial visit at FSU.

“I made the decision three days ago,” Wilder said. “The reason I chose FSU was just being comfortable with everything in regards to FSU.”

Afterward, Wilder indicated Georgia’s Orson Charles and Aaron Murray made it tough on him.

“At 6 o’clock this morning Orson Charles was blowing me up (with texts),” Wilder told FanHouse.com. “Oh my God, [Charles and Murray] were coming at me. They were definitely telling me to go where my heart is, where I feel best. But they were definitely on me”

Wilder, who has as many 80 scholarship offers according to his coach, is an all-around athlete who could play running back, linebacker or defensive end in college. As a result, he’s all over the map in recruiting rankings. MaxPreps.com rates him the No. 1 overall recruit in America while Rivals.com ranks him No. 3 overall. Scout.com considers him the nation’s No. 1-ranked linebacker in the nation and ESPNU has him as No. 2-ranked athlete.

But Wilder, the son of the Tampa Bay Bucs’ all-time leader rusher James Wilder Sr., has made it clear he wants play running back in college. Last season, he rushed for 1,004 yards and scored 15 touchdowns as a running back while leading Plant to the Class 5A state championship. Wilder had 136 tackles and 19 sacks as a linebacker and defensive end.

Later Wednesday night Georgia lost out on another elite Florida recruit who had the Bulldogs as a finalists. Groveland, Fla.’s, Nick Waisome, rated the No. 2 cornerback in America according to ESPNU, chose the Gators over Florida and Georgia.

So You Think You Can Dance - 'Winner Chosen' Season Finale

Cat welcomes America to the final episode of this season's " So You Think You Can Dance " and continues to pimp the idea of a " Genuine Dance Superstar " to perform. Sadly, she was lying because I know that Fox doesn't have the technology to revive Fred Astaire or Michael Jackson. The finale could have been fit into a half-hour, but why would Fox do something silly like that? They probably made buckets of money from advertisers.

So You Think You Can Dance

Since it's a celebration, we have seven judges and choreographers including the missed Mary Murphy. Sure, her opinions were usually off the rocker, but Mia doesn't make sense and Adam would suggest casting the dancer in his next movie. We get a video evolution of Nigel's hair and I loved hearing Mary's laughter in the background. Mia gets a montage of her odd vocabulary and Adam gets the Blue Steel face montage. Along with them are Tyce Diorio, Stacey Tookey, and Kenny Ortega. All four extra judges don't do much except stand and clap.

Group Dance (Christopher Scott) - We start off with Melinda actually getting to tap. The all-stars accompany the 11 as Jose and Dominick perform some break, Jose doing less grounded moves. Twitch gets to control the girls, but poor Alex gets wheeled in and has to perform on a chair while everyone flips around him. Everyone sans Alex goes out and performs near the end. If they could get Artie in 'Glee' to be in most of the performances, Alex in a chair with wheels could have been there as well.

Kenny's Pick - Kent & Neil - 'Shoeless Joe'(Broadway) - I think that Kent did the best whenever he was paired up with Neil because it helped raise him up to a higher level. The gymnastics and incredible leaps were remarkable. I love how in the end, they slid right next to a sitting Cat.

Nigel's Pick - Billy & Ade -'Mad World' (Contemporary) - Billy matured after this performance, he created a believable character and didn't lose focus. Stacey Tookey found the best in Ade and Billy and while she let them dance very individually throughout, she managed to capture magic when they interacted.

Guest Performance - Quest Crew - It's nice to see an extended crew from 'America's Best Dance Crew,' but I'm a bit confused as to why Dominic wasn't there. Nevertheless, the crew did great without him. I liked the use of music and the fade in the middle, along with each of the members getting a chance to have the spotlight.

Mia's Pick - Adechike & Comfort - 'Fallin'' (Lyrical Hip-Hop) - Mia's statement was right, Comfort came out of nowhere to be a really good choice for all-star. This was my favorite Adechike performance because of the raw emotion in the routine.

Romance Clips & Kent & Anya - 'My First Kiss' (Cha-Cha) - There was a lot of weird sexual chemistry this season, more than previous seasons. We end with a shot of Nigel and Adam in their imaginary wedding photo. This isn't a judge pick, but the dance matched the clip it preceded. Anya is still amazing to watch making all those splits. Funny enough, Kent lost sync near the end and didn't match arms up correctly with Anya.

Tyce's Pick - Robert & Dominic - 'Scars' (Hip-Hop) - I liked the use of props in this routine because it helped emphasize the very extreme poses the two made. Also notable in the routine was how intricate the balloon work was on the side of the stage.

National Dance Day Montage - Mostly a lot of shameless advertising, culminating with silly dancing videos. Of all the videos, the NASA dancing robot looked like the most fun.

Nigel's Tap Skit - Nigel makes a joke about the season 7 curse and Adam Shankman's wallet. Then the most adorable kid, Luke, taps. Sadly, he's miles better than Melinda and a third of her age. Maybe we'll find him in season 17.

Menzari Brothers - I find it funny that they can find really good tappers to showcase on the finale, but none of them ever audition for the show. Are they too old, or just too good for the show? The two did a great job with both creating an interesting beat and keeping in sync.

Nigel's Pick - Lauren & Pasha - 'Oblivion' (Argentine Tango) - Lauren continues to dazzle with Ballroom, her effortlessness in the lifts and glides across the stage. Pasha also proves that he can do great with buttons on his shirt.

Adam's Pick - Robert & Allison - ;Fix You' (Contemporary) - Robert put his all in to the routine because he channeled his own mother. I'm sure that this routine will rank next to the cancer dance of season five.

Russel's Final Performance - Lil' C accompanies Russell and both hit really hard. I really like C's performance. It's nice seeing Krump hit as hard as it should be. Their floor work was amazing.

Mary's Pick - Jose & Dominic - 'Battle for the Beat"'(B-Boy) - Mary finally unleashes her hot tamale scream, though I'm a bit surprised that she was assigned this to talk about. The routine is good, don't get me wrong, but not Mary's specialty. I prefer Dominic's lighter approach than Jose's grounded tricks.

Special Performance - Charlie Bruce & Neil - I'm not sure the 'So You Think You Can Dance: UK' winner had "perform at the finale of the U.S. version" as part of their prize, but the routine is beautiful to watch. Charlie had beautiful extensions and watching her split and arch her back was beautiful. Neil was there for her every step for the lifts.

We finally get to the final three and Robert sadly gets laughed at for wearing his Bollywood outfit; I'm sure there is an Indian group offended by the jokes. Cat finally reveals that the third place contestant is Robert. It was a done deal after both Lauren & Kent grabbed most of America's vote. Cat manages to compliment Robert's getup, he gets his montage and thanks everyone. He gets a big bouquet and is shuffled off into oblivion.

Adam's Pick - Lauren & Twitch 'My Chick Bad'(Hip-Hop) - I loved how dirty Lauren got in this routine. He kept up with Twitch a lot better in this routine than last night's election dance.

Cat's Pick - Alex & Allison - 'Hallelujah] (Contemporary) - It's a shame not having Alex around for the rest of the season because he brought a lot into his routine. Whoever said he was like a robot dancing was proven wrong after this routine.

Stacey's Pick - Billy & Robert 'Ganesh' (Bollywood) - Unlike Kent's routine last night, this routine was hard hitting and had a little bit of everything in it. It's also nice seeing that Robert kept the passion even knowing that he lost.

Mia's Pick - Kent & Neil 'How it Ends' (Contemporary) - Obviously, the routine was about a same-sex breakup, but I love how the routine was given a very positive reception. It's hard sometimes to make a contemporary dancer look really masculine and Travis did a great job making the routine look strong with two men.

Musical Guest - Black Gold 'Shine' - We get a montage of contestants, but for some reason, they allow voice-overs of the contestants with inspirational phrases to overdub the singing. Black Gold was giving it all they could as well, but don't get the real focus. I find it really funny that they slipped in a shot of Cat dancing.

Alex's "Outta Your Mind" Hip-Hop Routine - Ellen DeGeneres shows up to replace Alex. The only problem I really have with the routine is the fact that it almost makes fun of Alex. Ellen wasn't as hard hitting or as passionate as Alex, but then again it could be worse, Katie Holmes could come back. I guess since DeGeneres is not going back on 'American Idol,' Fox wanted to use her wherever they could.

It's finally time to reveal the winner, first with a montage of how the dancers got there. Ironically, Nigel revealed to both of them that they were making it to the top eleven. After almost two hours of waiting, the winner is Lauren. It actually reminds me of that moment when Kelly Clarkson won the first season of 'Idol' because it was that hope that Kelly would win, but the acceptance that Justin Guarini had the little girls' vote.

I'm very happy that America didn't let Kent win just because of his charisma. He is a good dancer and has matured light years from when we first saw him. I'm sure Adam would say his look is very commercial and he could fit well as a Broadway backup dancer. Lauren deserved the win, especially having weeks of girls being eliminated in the beginning of the competition.

Where you satisfied by the finale? Who else was upset with Ellen being the "superstar" Cat kept mentioning? Leave your comments below.

TweetDeck Arrives on Android

Starting this Thursday, popular social media management tool TweetDeck will be available as an Android app. The company is opening its beta program in the morning, and we were lucky enough to get our hands on a copy tonight.

We’ve tried other Android apps that have promised varying degrees of functionality and features for social media work and play; we’ve experienced varying degrees of satisfaction so far with all of them.

The TweetDeck app for Android is still “very beta,” a.k.a. lacking the polish you’d expect from a completely finished application. We tried playing around with it a bit tonight; while we’ll be delighted when more mature builds are available, we still think the app has breathtaking potential.

It integrates Facebook, Twitter, Buzz and Foursquare accounts into a single application. Updates are color-coded and presented in a single, blended column. There’s also a “Me” column for reviewing all your Twitter @replies and comments and like for your Facebook posts.

To give you an idea of what the app will look like, here are the signin and Home screens:

And here’s what a Foursquare venue screen and Twitter profile page look like:
Overall, the UI is clean and optimized for mobile displays — and the way updates are pulled is easier on battery life than having a constantly running, real-time stream of data.

And we’ve got to hand it to the developers and designers at TweetDeck for giving Android users even more fun and useful features than are currently available on the iPhone version of TweetDeck, which doesn’t yet support Foursquare or Buzz. But this Android app is a clear signal of where the company’s Apple-focused applications will be headed.

In future iterations of the app, TweetDeck hopes to add improved map performance, better handling for multiple Twitter accounts, video upload capabilities and better integration with Android hardware.

Check the company’s website in a few more hours for details on how you can be part of its Android beta program, and definitely let us know what you think of the app in the comments.

Francisco Rodriguez Arrested For 'Physical Assault' Of Father-In-Law

Francisco Rodriguez was charged with third-degree assault late Wednesday night after scuffling with his father-in-law at Citi Field, police said.

Francisco RodriguezRodriguez was arrested and being held at the ballpark early Thursday, police said. His father-in-law was in a hospital with a scrape on his face and a bump on his head.

"There was an incident at the ballpark between Francisco Rodriguez and his family. He was questioned by police and all other questions pertaining to this matter can be addressed to police," Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said.

Several security guards, along some women and children, were seen around the Mets' family lounge near the clubhouse after New York's 6-2 loss to Colorado. Rodriguez's father-in-law had swelling above his right eyebrow.

Rodriguez has had previous confrontations with a team official, a coach and an opponent in his 1 1/2 seasons with the Mets, though none of them reached this level.

The excitable, 28-year-old pitcher signed a three-year, $37 million contract with the Mets after posting a record 62 saves with the Angels in 2008. He is 4-2 with 25 saves and a 2.24 ERA this season.

Rodriguez did not pitch in the Mets' latest loss, which dropped them below .500. Reliever Manny Acosta gave up a two-out grand slam to Melvin Mora in the eighth inning.

In May, Rodriguez and bullpen coach Randy Niemann got into a heated exchange while the pitcher was preparing to enter a game. Mets manager Jerry Manuel later said the matter was resolved, without divulging what caused the dispute.

In July 2009, Rodriguez and former Mets official Tony Bernazard argued aboard the team bus. Bernazard was later fired by the Mets amid several allegations.

That June, Rodriguez and New York Yankees reliever Brian Bruney needed to be separated before a game. They had jawed at each other in the media a day earlier.

Teen Beauty Queen Stripped Of Crown For Becoming Brunette

15-year-old beauty queen Olivia O’Neil never realized the color of her hair could cost her the beloved crown she won only three months earlier as Miss Teen Wanganui. But when Facebook photos surfaced of her sporting a dark brown ‘do, as opposed to her usual blonde locks, things went awry.

After seeing the photos, pageant organizer Barbara Osborne had some choice words for Olivia’s darkened look. “Is that a wig?” I hope it is, don’t give me heart failure,” Osborne wrote. But despite Osborne’s seemingly threatening words, Olivia would not back down.

She admitted that her hair was, indeed brown, and that if being a Teen Queen meant she couldn’t dye her hair, well, then maybe she wasn’t cut out for the pageant life, after all. But of course, the drama did not stop there.

“Well you better decide, miss. Hand over your crown with an attitude like that. I’m sure someone will step into your place with manners,” Osborne said. And hand over the crown Olivia did. But not without dishing the dirt on Osborne’s harsh treatment of the girls.

After Osborne reportedly told her she would “would not go far in this world,” Olivia told the New Zealand Herald:

“I don’t think you can tell a 15-year-old that they aren’t going to go very far in life. It’s hurtful. She was always really harsh on the girls. And when she says things like ‘present yourself better’, ‘wear lots of makeup’, ‘do 20 sit-ups’, it gets to you after a while.”

No one over at the pageant’s office is denying Olivia’s crown was stripped due to the dye. “The expectation in holding the crown [was] that she maintain the image she had when she won it,” a spokeswoman said. Apparently that image had more to do with her blonde hair than Olivia had thought.

They are, however, denying the accusations of Osborne’s treatment of the girls. What Olivia was referring to was “advice,” not “yelling,” they claim.

“In a beauty pageant, it’s not about sugar coating and providing lip service to the girls. They should be treated the same way as in any other beauty pageant in the world.”

Flurry’s AppCircle Makes Android Apps Easier to FindFlurry’s AppCircle Makes Android Apps Easier to Find

Flurry, a mobile analytics and monetization company, has released an Android version of AppCircle, an app discovery tool.

Flurry AppCircleAppCircle, we’re told by a Flurry rep, is basically a “massive cross-selling network among participating apps that use Flurry Analytics.” It’s also an intelligent recommendation engine similar to the one used by Netflix, iTunes Genius or Amazon.com. The recommendations come from within the app as the user is using it.

Briefly, AppCircle just might help Android device users find truly useful, entertaining and relevant apps and also help developers make money from their Android applications.

AppCircle started off as a tool for iPhone apps. As such, it was used by around 600 companies whose apps were distributed among 22 million iOS devices.

As the Android platform and the Android Market both experience rapid grow, Flurry CEO Simon Khalaf says that developers and users alike struggle to bring quality apps to the top of the heap. “With more than 100,000 applications in the Android Market and limited promotional services beyond rankings” he said in a release, “quality applications are struggling to rise above the noise.”

Khalaf and his team hope their recommendation engine will make sure the right apps find their way to the best-qualified users, creating a more efficient discovery process with less frustration for Android users and lower promotional costs for developers.

Facebook Enters the Google-Verizon Net Neutrality Debate

Facebook has entered the net neutrality debate with a statement critical of the key provisions of Google and Verizon’s net neutrality proposal.

Ever since we found out Google and Verizon were in talks over net neutrality’s future, the web has been awash with an endless stream of opinions, most of them expressing outrage. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is not happy, and neither is the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).

Facebook , it seems, isn’t a fan of the Google - Verizon proposal as it’s currently written. Here is the company’s statement (emphasis ours):

“Facebook continues to support principles of net neutrality for both landline and wireless networks. Preserving an open Internet (Internet) that is accessible to innovators — regardless of their size or wealth — will promote a vibrant and competitive marketplace where consumers have ultimate control over the content and services delivered through their Internet connections.”

There are several sections of the proposal that trouble a lot of people, but the biggest sticking point is the exclusion of wireless networks from net neutrality regulations. Verizon and Google exclude it from their proposal for wired connections because “imposition of too many rules up front would not allow us to optimize this network in a fashion that would supercharge the growth we’ve seen in the past.” Critics say that Google and Verizon are trying to protect their own interests, especially their highly profitable Android (Android) partnership.

Facebook’s statement doesn’t surprise us; the Google and Facebook are now at war, and allowing Google to define net neutrality on its own terms presents a grave threat to the social network’s business.

For now, expect more of these nuanced statements from all of the parties involved — that is, until the Google-Verizon proposal makes its way to Congress. That’s where you’ll find the real fireworks.
